This Video Explain the relevance of International Year of Biodiversity and the role one can play using WED 2010

Seriousness of Biodiversity Loss:  about 1.75 million species of the 13 to 14 million species that are thought to exist on Earth have been identified. Yet this rich diversity is being lost at a greatly accelerated rate because of human activities. Scientists estimate that between 150 and 200 species become extinct every 24 hours.

According to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) 21 per cent of all known mammals, 30 per cent of all known amphibians, 12 per cent of all known birds, 28 per cent of reptiles, 37 per cent of freshwater fishes, 70 per cent of plants and 35 per cent of invertebrates assessed so far, are under threat. Of the 47,677 species in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species of 2009, 17,291 are deemed to be at serious risk.

In India: Biodiversity encompasses the variety of all life on earth. India is one of the 12-mega diverse countries of the world. With only 2.5% of the land area, India already accounts for 7.8% of the global recorded species.
